What is couple’s boudoir photography and why you and your partner should consider it!

Boudoir for women (and sometimes men) has been around for quite a long time. But couple’s boudoir is a newer, emerging trend that has some real spicy and fun flair to it that should be celebrated just as much!

So let’s dive in and take a look at what is so cool about this new trend.

What couple’s boudoir IS

As a definition, couple’s boudoir is a photo session with two people (or maybe more if you’re in a poly relationship) where the focus is on connection and intimacy in a sensual and fun way.

You’ll get to see your relationship reflected back at you through photographs and you’ll get to have those memories and keepsakes in your house after your session.

What couple’s boudoir is NOT

It’s not porn. It’s not erotica. In fact, there are very strict rules and regulations in place that spell out what bends a photograph from boudoir to erotica. Inappropriate physical touch, sex, masturbating, or real sexual activity is strictly prohibited in a boudoir setting.

Why it’s fun!

Think of all the ways you and your partner(s) are goofy, silly, playful, loving, sensual, and connected with each other. And then imagine creating a space where those moments can be captured and remembered. Everything you do at home together that makes you “YOU” can be done in a boudoir studio.

Plus, you can create looks and outfit combinations that make you feel like the best version of yourself with each other.

How you can feel comfortable during couple’s boudoir

Your partner or partners know you. They know you inside and out. They know your good days and your bad days and you’ve likely established an almost unspoken way of communicating your fears, desires, and feelings to each other. All of that can help you when you come in for your session.

If you’re nervous to be in front of a camera, let your partner hold you and ground you until you feel embraced and relaxed in the new environment.

Here are a few other tips to help you feel comfortable:

  1. Focus on each other, not the camera. Focus on the contact of your skin, each other’s eyes, and the safety you find in touch.
  2. More often than not, you’ll be posed as a unit, which means you won’t be the center of attention very often. You’ll be part of a larger pose with many parts and you get to do that with a comforting person by your side.
  3. You can start with more clothes and then work your way down to fewer or more revealing clothes. Nothing has to happen all at once, and tasteful full nudity never has to happen at all unless you’re comfortable with it.

I recently wrote a post on tips for posing so I recommend checking that out, too.
